Willie Wiredhand is the official mascot of America's electric cooperatives, created in 1951 by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Designed to represent the power and reliability of rural electric co-ops, Willie has become a beloved symbol of cooperative spirit and service.
Willie is a friendly, cartoon figure made up of electrical components:
-
His head is a standard electrical plug
-
His arms are wires
-
His torso is a light socket
-
His legs and feet are shaped like electrical prongs
With a cheerful expression and a can-do attitude, Willie Wiredhand has long been used to promote electrical safety, energy education, and the cooperative difference—emphasizing that co-ops are member-owned, locally operated, and built to serve the community. His name, a play on "hired hand," reinforces the idea that electricity is a dependable partner on the farm, in the home, and throughout rural America.
FFA Electrification Contest
Sumter EMC is proud to support (along with other Georgia EMCs) participation by local schools in the EMC/FFA Electrification Contest. The wiring contest is a competitive educational program which promotes the safe, efficient use of electrical energy.
