Tips If You See a Downed Powerline

Downed power lines should always be considered dangerous, even if they don’t appear to be energized. Follow these safety guidelines:

  1. Keep your distance: Stay at least 30 feet away from any downed power lines and alert others to do the same.

  2. Never touch: Avoid approaching, touching, or driving over a downed power line.

  3. Don't attempt to move them: Do not try to move a downed power line, as it could still be energized.

  4. Call for help: Immediately dial 911 or contact Sumter EMC at 229-924-8041 if you see a downed power line.

  5. Stay in your vehicle: If your car is hit by a downed power line, stay inside with your windows closed until emergency help arrives.

  6. Avoid water: Never use water near a downed power line, as it can conduct electricity.

  7. Do not use poles or sticks: Do not try to use any objects, like poles or sticks, to assist someone being shocked by a downed power line.

  8. Leave trees alone: Never attempt to cut or remove a tree tangled in power lines.
