Terrell County Receives New Playground through Sumter EMC

and Terrell County Community Heart & Soul Partnership

(Dawson, GA) – On Thursday, April 30th, a ribbon cutting was held to celebrate a brand-new playground at the Terrell County Recreation Department. Both Sumter EMC and Terrell County Community Heart & Soul were sponsors of this project. Georgia EMC, which is the statewide trade association for Georgia’s electric membership corporations, facilitated this project from beginning to end.

The project began in the Fall of 2022 when Terrell County Community Heart and Soul initiative was created. This process is described as a “resident driven discovery process that engages community members on what they love about their community, what they want for their future, and how to achieve it.” Through the gathering of community data, evidence proved that Terrell County wanted a safe and fun place for their children to play, thus the new playground at the Terrell County Recreation Department was born. Sara Lightner, a representative from the National Community Heart and Soul organization commented, “It was exciting to see Terrell County Community Heart & Soul share their Heart & Soul Statements in conjunction with the official opening of their new park.”

Representatives from both Georgia EMC and Sumter EMC were present at the official ribbon cutting, helping to mark the special occasion for Terrell County. Georgia EMC's Community & Leadership Development Manager, Jenny Robbins, stated, "It has been an honor to have served on behalf of Sumter EMC as the Terrell County Community Heart & Soul coach. The data collected confirms that this community values youth, families, and future generations. This is more than just a playground. It is evidence of what matters most to this community's residents, leadership, and Sumter EMC.” Sumter EMC dedicated nearly four years to this project, and Andrea Walker, Vice President of Marketing and Administration for Sumter EMC, had this to say, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much, and this project reflects that spirit. Sumter EMC is honored to be a community partner in Terrell County, supporting the collaborative efforts that continue fostering a place where families want to live, work, and play.” This new playground in Terrell County is a testament to how much communities can accomplish when its residents work together. The Community Heart and Soul project in Terrell County made a lasting impact, and this is just the beginning of all the great things Terrell County can accomplish!
